One of the largest and most exciting developments in recent years in Avoriaz has been the Aquariaz water park.
Aquariaz is the highest water park in Europe and is located right in the heart of Avoriaz. Costing 20 million euros to build, the location of Aquariaz provided unique challenges for the architects and builders. Space is at a premium in Avoriaz and therefore the water park could not expand outwards to the extent that some other water parks can, and so the first challenge was to cram as much as possile into a small space. The planners certainly rose to the challenge and have crafted a truly unique feature.
There are many features for all ages. These include -
The Water Playhouse: Designed for younger children this area features water slides, geysers, water guns and a paddling pool.
The Slidewinder: This is a ten metre high water half pipe that the more daring bathers can drop into in a rubber ring.
The Chill Out Space: This area is located in the centre of the main pool. It includes a gently flowing river, with bubbles, jets and areas that run at different speeds, bubble massage seats and an outdoors jacuzzi with spectacular views across the valley.
There is also a climbing wall above the pool and an outdoors spa with water heated to 34 degrees. The pool is decorated all around with tropical vegetation, providing a great atmosphere and offering quite a contrast with the Alpine surroundings outside.
Aquariaz is open throughout the winter and summer seasons from Sunday to Friday, from 2 PM till 8 PM. Entry for adults (12 years and older) is 9 euros before 4 PM and 11 euros after. For children from 5 to 11 it is 6 euros before 4 PM and 8 euros afterwards. Entryfor children of 3 and 4 is 3 euros. A one week pass for adults is 42 euros and 32 euros for children. There are also special deals for under 16s if they are staying with Pierre et Vacances. Unlike many swimming pools in France Aquariaz does not require swimmers to wear speedos and shorts are permitted.
Aquariaz also offers fitness classes such as Aqua Zumba. It is a great place to go to relax after a day on the slopes or an alternative activity for down days when the weather is bad and offers something very different to what people might expect in a ski resort.
