A move to sustain Morzine – Avoriaz’s snow coverage and improve the winter sports experience is in underway. The Montagne d’Avoriaz area is developing a high-altitude water reservoir and extending its artificial snow production network. Here’s a breakdown of what this project entails, how it supports sustainability, and the benefits it brings to the Morzine-Avoriaz region.

About the Reservoir

The planned high-altitude reservoir, known as a “retenue collinaire d’altitude,” is designed to store excess water from Lac 1730 in Avoriaz, collected during periods of high water flow in spring and autumn. This project, with a capacity of 92,500 cubic metres, will ensure a dependable water supply for artificial snow production across the Morzine-Avoriaz area, particularly during drier winter seasons when natural snowfall may be limited. Covering a total surface area of 3.29 hectares—comprising both the reservoir itself and its surrounding embankments—this reservoir is built to be both efficient and mindful of water use priorities, always maintaining potable water availability as the primary focus.

This reservoir aims to secure a stable water source for artificial snow production, making Morzine-Avoriaz less dependent on unpredictable snowfall.

Extension of the Snow Network

To enhance snow reliability across Morzine-Avoriaz, the snowmaking network will undergo a major expansion. The project plans to extend snow production capabilities across 23 hectares, creating a consistent snow layer over a broader area and ensuring high-quality skiing conditions throughout the season. This expansion will involve the installation of 4,840 metres of pipeline, which will allow for more efficient water delivery throughout the snowmaking network. In addition, 54 new snow cannons will be added, reinforcing the area’s snow coverage capacity and reducing reliance on natural snowfall. This updated infrastructure supports Morzine’s commitment to a sustainable, resilient winter tourism experience by providing a stable and eco-friendly solution to variable winter weather.

Project Location and Environmental Sensitivity

After evaluating potential sites, the project’s location was selected at Creux de la Joux, carefully chosen to avoid protected areas and minimise environmental disruption. This positioning aims to balance sustainable tourism and conservation.

Financial Investment and Sustainability

With a substantial financial commitment to the project, SERMA (the managing company) will amortise these costs over 10-20 years, investing roughly €350,000 annually. By establishing a reliable snow infrastructure, this project secures the operation of ski lifts and pistes, ultimately benefiting the tourism economy.

A Sustainable Future for Morzine-Avoriaz Tourism

This development ensures Morzine-Avoriaz remains a top choice for winter sports enthusiasts and local businesses while aligning with sustainable tourism goals. By securing snow reliability, this project safeguards the area’s tourism and economic future, offering benefits to locals and visitors alike.
